Not Under the Law

Beware of certain Messianic Synagogues (Jews for Jesus) or Hebrew Roots movements who claim that we must be obedient to all the laws of Moses and the ceremonial laws of the Levitical Priesthood. These people want to look religious and establish their salvation based on their own works, but this is not the way.

There are even some people in the Sacred Name Movement that believe they must use the original name of Jesus to be saved. This is not true, I have seen miraculous prayers answered under the name of JESUS and also demons cast out of people. This is another way for Satan to divide Christians and cause fear.

In addition, I have seen some Messianic Rabbis say that they were going to teach people how to wear the correct fabrics and sing in Hebrew. Do not allow anyone to try to put this heavy burden upon you, we are under the law of the Spirit of Christ by grace through faith in Jesus. No man will be justified by the works of the law.

  • Galatians 3:26-29 KJV - For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. [27] For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. [28] There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. [29] And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.

Jesus fulfilled the law of sin and death that Moses gave to the children of Israel:

  • Matthew 5:18 KJV - For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

Jesus Christ (God embodied) was the only one able to fulfill the law perfectly and justify Himself according to His own works in the law. Thus we are hid in His righteousness by faith:

  • Romans 10:4 KJV - For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.

Christ Jesus has freed us from the bondage of the law and this is reiterated in the book of Acts as it was declared unto the Gentiles by the Apostles:

  • Acts 15:28-29 KJV — For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things; [29] That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well.

Free from Torah

This means that the gentiles are purified by faith in Christ Jesus and not under the works of the law but by the law of the Spirit. Therefore, the Apostles put a light burden on them that they should abstain from a few things.

Again, no man is able be justified by the law of sin and death, except Christ Jesus (Yeshua/Yahushua) Himself:

  • Galatians 2:16 KJV - Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.
  • Galatians 5:1-6 KJV - Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage. [2] Behold, I Paul say unto you, that if ye be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing. [3] For I testify again to every man that is circumcised, that he is a debtor to do the whole law. [4] Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace. [5] For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith. [6] For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.

However, we are expected to keep the 10 commandments and the commandments of Jesus (Yeshua) as recorded in the Gospels accounts of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. The blood of Jesus paid for and initiated the new covenant that God made between man and God:

  • Hebrews 8:7-13 KJV - For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second. [8] For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah: [9] Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord. [10] For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people: [11] And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest. [12] For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more. [13] In that he saith, A new covenant , he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away.

Apostle Paul echoes this law of the Spirit in his letter to the Romans and the Galatians.

  • Romans 8:1-5 KJV — There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. [2] For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. [3] For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: [4] That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. [5] For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.
  • Galatians 5:13-17,17-21 KJV - For brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another. [14] For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. [15] But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another. [16] This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. [17] For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. [17] For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. [18] But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. [19] Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these ; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, [20] Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, [21] Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
  • Galatians 3:23-29 KJV - But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed. [24] Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. [25] But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster. [26] For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.

In the Book of Hebrews, Apostle Paul shows us that we are entered into God's rest through the finished work of Jesus (Yeshua). Therefore, we are free from the law of Moses and we rest from trying to obtain salvation according to our own works:

  • Hebrews 4:9-11 KJV - There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. [10] For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his. [11] Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.

Jesus paid the price with His life, death, burial, and resurrection so that we would be free from the law. Please be humble and accept the new covenant with sobriety and in truth of the new testament scriptures.

These people who push the law on Christians hypocritically take part of the law of Torah while ignoring the new testament scriptures and the Torah commandments about daily sacrifices, a Levitical Priesthood, a Tabernacle of Moses, yearly animal sacrifices and other parts of the Old Covenant. This dishonors the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit and causes confusion and burdens that is detrimental to true believers.

Once we recieve grace through faith in Jesus Christ and become born-again disciples who have turned away from sin, we become part of the Body of Christ. Each member is called into different types of ministry with different gifts of the Holy Spirit as Jesus sees fit. We are called to use our talents to the best of our ability to help the Body of Christ and reach the lost:

  • 1 Corinthians 12:1-31 KJV - Now concerning spiritual gifts , brethren, I would not have you ignorant. [2] Ye know that ye were Gentiles, carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led. [3] Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost. [4] Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. [5] And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. [6] And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. [7] But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. [8] For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; [9] To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; [10] To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: [11] But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will. [12] For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ. [13] For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. [14] For the body is not one member, but many. [15] If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? [16] And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? [17] If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling? [18] But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him. [19] And if they were all one member, where were the body? [20] But now are they many members, yet but one body. [21] And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you. [22] Nay, much more those members of the body, which seem to be more feeble, are necessary: [23] And those members of the body, which we think to be less honourable, upon these we bestow more abundant honour; and our uncomely parts have more abundant comeliness. [24] For our comely parts have no need: but God hath tempered the body together, having given more abundant honour to that part which lacked: [25] That there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another. [26] And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it. [27] Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular. [28] And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues. [29] Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles? [30] Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret? [31] But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.

We cannot cling on to the world and our old life, and seek to be in God's good grace.

  • James 4:4 KJV - Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

I've found that, in times past, I would hang around my sinner friends and family and never reach the repentance and santification necessary for redemption because I felt constantly pressured and judged for doing the right thing. I would be scorned or mocked for not wanting to drink or smoke or fornicate or lie.

I've included a couple verses that show that while we can reach out to sinners as Jesus did, we should not dwell with unrighteousness:

  • 2 Corinthians 6:14-18 KJV - Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? [15] And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? [16] And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them ; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. [17] Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing ; and I will receive you, [18] And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.
  • Matthew 8:21-22 KJV - And another of his disciples said unto him, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my  father. [22] But Jesus said unto him, Follow me; and let the dead bury their dead.
  • 2 Timothy 3:12 KJV - Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.

  • Psalm 1:1-6 KJV - Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. [2] But his delight is in the law of the Lord ; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. [3] And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. [4] The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away. [5] Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. [6] For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.
